1. In this passage, Charlip uses quotes to quote what others wrote when and briefly summarized opinion from a sociology professor referring to the views of others. Signal phrases she uses included"Marz and Engels wrote:" and " the average American will tell you...". In the second paragraph, she uses " His definition:" in referring to the sociology professor's definition of the shrinking of the middle class. In the first paragraph, Charlip use "if only that were true," right after quoting what Marx and Engels wrote showing that she is not necessarily agreeing with the view from them. After she describes other's view, she uses signal phrases like "but i always felt ..." to distinguish her views from theirs.
2. For exercise 2, I'll use my last assignment the argumentative essay "Are Zoos Cruel?" as my study example. In my essay, I take position in disagreeing the statement 'Zoos are cruel.' There are only two perspectives i engage in this essay. Opponents think that zoo is to keep wild animals in enclosures that stop them from living their natural life. I'll disagree on that by proving that their argument is based on incomplete evidence and questionable assumptions. In order to prove that, i use signal phrase like 'Many argue.....But in fact, it is not true.." to distinguish my view. There are also many other voice-identifying devices use in the essay to clarify who is saying what. Like "X argue...", "According to ..." and " The evidence shows that...". Other option I can do is to embed a reference to other's argument in my own sentences. However, in my particular essay, using voice-identifying devices with most of the template the book offers is the best suited.

After reading your passage to the first exercise I felt as though you missed the authors whole view in the last paragraph when she had gone back to ask "How do we define class? Is it an issue of values, lifestyle, taste?" Take a look at it.
ReplyDeleteYour second exercise made me want to read you're paper! I believe that most arguments that are based on incomplete evidence are generally easy to break apart, great idea to use that strategy!
There were alot of examples the author used to describe herself that you left out.
ReplyDelete"In my days as a newspaper reporter, I once asked a sociology professor what he thought about the reported shrinking of the middle class."
"As an historian, I seek the answers to these questions in the specificity of my past."
Those were 2 examples that you failed to mention in your blog.
I liked the second part of the assignment, I think you completed the assignment as asked. You always did a good job of giving examples of signal markers when stating your view and the views of others.
The main thing you could have done better in this exercise was to give more thorough examples from exercise #1. It seems like you just did a quick over and referenced a few of the examples you saw instead of all of them, so you might want to be a little more comprehensive next time.
ReplyDeleteIn exercise #2 you did fantastic. The examples phrases you cited from your work are excellent and clearly direct the reader as to whose opinion is being presented. It seems like an impressively written paper!
I feel as if you have left out the author's main view and that the paragraph was written briefly. However, you did a fantastic job in the second exercise. I would love to read your essay. I personally think zoo's are cruel to animals but that's just my opinion. Great job overall.
ReplyDeleteI think you did an good job on distinguishing the signal phrases in the two exercises. However, you did miss out some important signal phrases that the author used. Maybe you should have read it sentence by sentence and then talked about the signal phrases. Also, you might want to reread your assignments before you turn them in, there's quite a bit of type-o's that can be a little distracting. Well, they were for me. I was just a little confused reading some of the sentences. =\ Besides that, everything else was good, great job!
